Designer Feature Series: Meet Zoe Scutts

About Zoe Scutts:
I am a prolific designer and maker in a variety of media including ceramics, glass, wool and screen-printing.

The style of my work could be described as elegantly simple. I am at my happiest when creating and experimenting.

My formative career in graphic design along with a first-class degree has made me hungry for visual inspiration and fully aware of the importance of the value of quality in what I make.

I have two primary school aged children; so life is hectic to say the least.

Inspirations:
My mantra is simplicity, purity and honesty. I am inspired by textures and typography. My work’s strength is in its spatial awareness – the scale, the feel, the shape, the form…

Best Sellers:

This is my signature piece as it bridges all my inspirations in a medium that I love to work and experiment with.

Designer Feature Series: Meet Folk Art Paper Cuts

About Folk Art Paper Cuts:

I am a papercutting artist working from home in Hertfordshire. I’ve been papercutting for just about 3 years now, having tried my hand at various other things over the years – from mosaics to polymer clay.  As soon as I started papercutting, I knew that I’d finally found the genre for me!  I sell originals, prints and cards online via Etsy and Folksy and also through fairs and pop-up shows.  All my papercuts are my own original hand-drawn designs and are cut with a craft knife from a single piece of paper.

Inspirations:

My work is strongly influenced by American and European folk art and reflects themes of nature and rural life.  I only draw and cut what I would love to display in my own home.  Papercutting is seeing a bit of a resurgence at the moment, so I hope I’m just producing beautiful and decorative pieces that people enjoy looking at.

Best Sellers:

My best-selling piece is my “Life is Good” print.  I think people really like the sentiment of the message, together with all the tiny details in the papercut itself.

We Make Christmas Pop Up Shopping Experience:

At the Christmas Fair I’ll be selling originals, prints and cards.  My aim is to try and keep my original artwork affordable – especially in today’s financial climate. So hopefully there’ll be something for everyone!

Designer Feature Series: Meet Edwyn UK

About EdwynUK:
My name is Louise and EdwynUK is my small company based in East London designing and producing quality hand made products for 'hound and home'. These include cushions, bags, draught excluders, doorstops and neckerchiefs to name but a few, but all with a dog theme! I use hand embroidery, appliqué and hand block-printing using lino cuts of dog faces that I carve myself. I love to use linens cottons and wools and particularly like combining colours and textures.
I trained in Furniture Design at the Royal College of Art and went on to work in architectural practices and then freelance for large retail ‘home’ departments. It was after the arrival of my Welsh Terrier Edwyn (named after my hero Edwyn Collins) that my world became more and more dog focused and I decided to combine both interests and offer something a little different for design conscious dog lovers.

Inspirations:
My personal inspirations, apart from the obvious love of dogs, are I think the big skies and country landscapes of my youth growing up in a small Lincolnshire market town which probably explains why I settled in East London with it’s vast expanses of marshland and forests and big skies – a combination of urban and outdoor living which I’m lucky to explore everyday walking my dog or pottering on the allotment. I love design, interesting buildings and spaces, things that have a sense of craftmanship and utility with a particularly ‘British’ sensibility.

Best Sellers:

The tidy pouch, which I introduced earlier this year, is just one of my best sellers. It is a waterproof lined pouch that can clip on to the lead, belt or bag and are very practical for dog owners and parents alike!
The neckerchiefs are still a firm favourite with customers as are the dog print keyrings , it’s very hard to choose between them!

We Make Christmas Pop Up Shopping Experience:

Especially for Christmas we will have our red velvet backed Dog Christmas Decorations in the different breeds, some lovely bone squeaker toys for dogs, and a new EdwynUK toy bag. There will be neckerchiefs in some great new fabrics and our fun bone and ‘dog of arms’ pillows, doorstops, draught excluders and dog walk bags.
